Crib Mattress Dimensions
You need to compare the crib mattress dimensions with the dimensions of your baby crib in order to determine if it's the right and safe fit.
A standard baby mattress will have the following dimensions:
- Length = 51 5/8 inches
- Width = 27 1/4 inches
- Height/Thickness = no more than 6 inches
But keep in mind, many crib mattresses will have slightly different dimensions. This is ok, only if the mattress fits very tightly in the crib. Meaning, you should not be able to fit two finger widths between the mattress edges and the inside of the crib. Otherwise, the mattress is too small (or crib is to big) and this is a potential safety hazard for your baby.
These crib mattresses may be the right fit for your baby crib:

Parents need to understand that baby limbs are very tiny, and as result they may get caught in between even very small spaces. That's why I recommend that you measure the mattress prior to placing it into the crib.
Summary of suggested procedures:
- Perform the "finger test" to establish if the mattress is the right fit for your baby’s crib.
- Check that the assembly directions with the crib and the mattress specify the standard measurements of 51-5/8 inches long, 27-1/4 inches wide, and no more than 6 inches deep.
- Double check by measuring the crib mattress and crib yourself.
There are several key factors you need to look at prior to buying the baby mattress. Proper dimensions is just one. Firmness and what it's made of is also very important.
